AFCON 2026 Final Controversy: Senegal Stun Morocco After Dramatic VAR Drama in Rabat

The 2026 Africa Cup of Nations final lived up to its billing as a night of drama, controversy, and heartbreak, as Senegal defeated hosts Morocco in a chaotic final played on 18 January 2026 at the Stade Prince Moulay Abdallah, Rabat, a 69,500-capacity stadium.

First Half: Senegal Dominant but Wasteful

The opening 45 minutes ended goalless despite Senegal being the better side.
The 2023 AFCON champions registered two shots on target, created two clear-cut chances, and won four corners, but failed to convert their dominance.

Morocco, backed by a passionate home crowd, struggled offensively with zero shots on target, one big chance, two corners, and 49% possession, managing to hold Senegal to a 0–0 draw at halftime.

Second Half: VAR Drama and Pitch Walkout

The match exploded into controversy late in regulation time.
In the 90th minute, DR Congo referee Jean-Jacques Ndala ruled out what appeared to be a legitimate Senegalese goal.

Moments later, in the 98th minute of added time, the referee awarded a highly controversial penalty to Morocco following a VAR review.

Furious, the Senegalese players protested the decision and walked off the pitch, retreating to the dressing room. The standoff lasted over 10 minutes, with intense arguments surrounding the VAR call.

Senegal captain Sadio Mané was later seen running into the tunnel to persuade his teammates to return and finish the match.
