US Bombs Iran: Washington Defends Strikes at UN Security Council as Trump Claims Khamenei Killed
The United States Ambassador to the UN, Mike Waltz, has delivered a forceful address at the United Nations Security Council, accusing Iran of decades of aggression and defending recent military action against Tehran.
Speaking before the Council, the U.S. representative said the regime in Tehran has been responsible for attacks that have cost American lives, including the deaths of U.S. Marines in Lebanon and thousands of troops in Iraq. The envoy also cited repeated attacks on U.S. vessels in the Red Sea and accused Iran of financing and arming militant groups that destabilize the Middle East.
The United States argued that Iran’s continued pursuit of advanced missile technology and its refusal to abandon nuclear ambitions pose what it described as a “grave and mounting danger” to global security. Reaffirming a long-standing international position, the U.S. stressed that Iran must not be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon.
UN Resolutions Cited
In its remarks, Washington pointed to a series of binding Security Council resolutions adopted under Chapter VII of the UN Charter, beginning with Resolution 1696 in 2006, which demanded that Iran suspend all uranium enrichment and reprocessing activities.
This was followed by Resolution 1737 in 2006, imposing sanctions including bans on nuclear-related materials and asset freezes on individuals and entities linked to Iran’s nuclear program. Additional measures were introduced under:
- Resolution 1747 (2007), expanding arms embargoes and asset freezes
- Resolution 1803 (2008), tightening restrictions on dual-use goods and calling for cargo inspections
- Resolution 1835 (2008), reaffirming compliance demands
- Resolution 1929 (2010), broadening sanctions on ballistic missile activities, arms transfers, the IRGC, and Iranian financial institutions
According to the U.S., these measures reflected the international community’s collective judgment that Iran’s nuclear and missile activities threatened international peace and security.
The American representative also stated that on September 19, 2025, the Security Council restored “snapback” sanctions, signaling renewed enforcement pressure on Tehran.
Diplomacy and Escalation
The speech highlighted repeated diplomatic efforts by Washington, referencing initiatives under former U.S. President Donald Trump and engagements by senior officials. However, the U.S. maintained that diplomacy cannot succeed without what it described as genuine willingness from Tehran to cease aggression.
In dramatic developments following the address, reports broadcast by France 24 claimed that the United States had conducted strikes on Iran earlier in the day. President Trump later posted on social media, alleging that Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, had been killed.
As of now, there has been no independent confirmation from Iranian authorities regarding the reported death of Khamenei.
The situation remains fluid, with the international community closely monitoring developments amid fears of wider regional escalation.
