Manager Eddie Howe says losing Jacob Murphy and Alexander Isak to injury in Newcastle United’s defeat against Borussia Dortmund is a “big blow”.

Striker Isak and midfielder Murphy both had to be substituted because of injury.

“Jacob came off with what looks like a serious injury,” Howe told TNT Sports.

“We’ve got a small squad as is it. That’s probably the most disappointing thing of the night.

“It looks like a recurrence of his Isak’s groin problem and it’s a big blow. Jacob’s looks serious, potentially a dislocation of his shoulder.”

Isak, who has scored eight times in 2023-24, was brought into the starting 11 in place of Callum Wilson for the visit of Dortmund but lasted just 15 minutes.

Murphy came off the bench in the 65th minute and had to be helped off the field with his shirt being used as a makeshift sling five minutes later.

The duo will join defender Sven Botman and winger Harvey Barnes in the treatment room as Newcastle’s injury list continues to swell.

Botman has missed Newcastle’s last six games with a knee issue and could be on the sidelines for a further two weeks while Barnes was ruled out for about three months because of a foot injury, although he does not require surgery.

In the next two weeks the Magpies faced Wolverhampton Wanderers and Arsenal in the Premier League, Manchester United in the Carabao Cup and played the return match against Dortmund in the Champions League in Germany.
