Lions International donates to flood victims in South Dayi

Responding to the clarion call of victims of flooding incidents along the lower Volta Basin, Lions International has presented some relief items to be distributed to the victims in the South Dayi District of the Volta Region.

The 2nd Vice District Governor, Lion Prince Obeng Dwamena led a team to Tongor to hand over the items to traditional authorities in the area.

The items included water, used clothing, medical consumables, and food, among others.

Lion Prince Obeng Dwamena lamented the devastating effects of the flood, caused by the spilling of the Volta and Kpong dams as a result of a rise in the water level in the Volta Lake.

He said it was unfortunate for people to have lost their livelihoods and properties they have worked for all their lives and commiserated with the victims.

He added that his outfit committed to helping mitigate the impact of the floods, organized the items to support the victims as they were faced with hard times.

The District Disaster Chairperson, Lion Prof. Emeritus Peter Asubounteng was touched by the devastation of the floods and the plights of the people.

He entered organizations and individuals to show compassion and come to the aid of the victims, who are struggling to put their lives back on track.

The South Dayi Member of Parliament, Rockson Nelson Defeamekpor, lauded the gesture of Lions International to help the victims survive the period.

He, however, lamented the Volta River Authority’s “unwillingness” to await the plight of the people who had sacrificed their homes and lands during the construction of the dam.

He questioned why the VRA had refused to fully comply with the Establishment Act which mandates the Authority to manage all affected communities as though they were business entities, as is being done to Akosombo and Akuse.

Mr. Defeamekpor also entered into the Ghana Water Company to extend potable water to its jurisdiction as residents continue to rely on the heavily polluted water from the lake.
