Bawumia Fires Back at Critics as NPP Flagbearer Campaign Nears End
With just four days to the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) internal elections, the five presidential aspirants have almost completed tours of the party’s 275 constituencies to canvass support from delegates.
As the nationwide campaign draws to a close, former Vice President and former presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, paid a courtesy visit to delegates in the Atwima Nwabiagya Constituency.
During the interaction, Dr. Bawumia strongly dismissed claims by critics who blame him for the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 general elections and allegations that he lost support in Zongo communities. He described such assertions as baseless, categorizing them under what he termed “Nkonkonsa 1–7,” meaning lies and political gossip.
Addressing what he labelled “Nkonkonsa number five,” Dr. Bawumia drew comparisons with the political journey of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. He noted that in 2012, when Akufo-Addo was the party’s flagbearer, the NPP failed to win a seat in six out of the then ten regions. However, when he was given another opportunity in 2016, he went on to secure victory.
Dr. Bawumia argued that although I lost five seats out of the current sixteen regions in the 2024 elections, history shows that continuity and experience can lead to eventual success. He expressed confidence that if given another chance, he would lead the NPP back to power.
On “Nkonkonsa number six,” Dr. Bawumia responded to claims that he is new to the party. He questioned the logic of such assertions, stating that having spent 17 years in the party, served eight years as a running mate, and one year as a flagbearer, it would be unfair to label him a stranger. He further revealed that his father was among the founding members of the NPP, reinforcing his long-standing ties to the party.
