Former Motherwell defender Max Johnston has received his first call-up by Scotland after he was drafted into the squad for Tuesday’s friendly in France.

Johnston, the son of former Scotland and Rangers winger Allan, has been added as cover by Steve Clarke after Brentford’s Aaron Hickey pulled out.

Captain Andrew Robertson had already withdrawn with a shoulder injury.

Sturm Graz’s Johnston, 19, joins Nathan Patterson and Greg Taylor as the recognized full-backs in the squad.

Hey joined the Austrian Bundesliga club from Motherwell on a four-year contract last summer.

Liverpool defender Robertson suffered a serious-looking injury against Spain on Thursday while Hickey played the full match as Scotland lost to Seville in Euro 2024 qualifying.

Johnston – who made his senior breakthrough during a loan spell in 2021-22 with Queen of the South, where his father was manager – had been with the Under-21 squad and played in Friday’s 3-1 win against Hungaryexternal-link before being sent off in the last few minutes.

Scotland face France in Lille (19:45 BST) two days after their qualification for Euro 2024 was secured as a result of Spain’s victory in Norway.
