Mahama Pledges Prosperous Future in Ghana’s 69th Independence Day Address
President John Dramani Mahama has outlined a bold vision for Ghana’s future, promising economic transformation, stronger institutions, and renewed national discipline during his address marking the country’s Independence Day celebration. Speaking at the 69th anniversary event, the president said his administration is committed to building a Ghana where education and healthcare are accessible, infrastructure is world-class, and opportunities are determined by merit rather than political connections.
According to him, the vision includes a digitally connected nation stretching from Aflao in the Volta Region to Hamile in the Upper West Region, while preserving forests and protecting the environment for future generations. “Ghana must become a country that produces what it consumes,” he stated, stressing that economic independence is essential for long-term prosperity.
Call for Collective National Effort
The president reminded citizens that Ghana’s progress depends on collective responsibility. “Wherever you are and whatever you do, do your part with excellence. Do it for Ghana, for Africa, and for generations yet unborn,” he urged. He acknowledged that Ghana’s journey since independence has not always been smooth but praised Ghanaians’ resilience and the country for overcoming challenges. “Sixty-nine years ago, our nation was born in hope, and today we renew that hope. Though we have stumbled along the way, we have never given up,” he said.
Commitment to Integrity and Leadership
President Mahama pledged to serve with integrity and humility, emphasizing that leadership alone cannot guarantee progress. “Ghana’s progress cannot rely solely on my leadership. It will depend on every citizen doing their part,” he said. He reiterated that national development requires discipline in public service, responsible management of resources, and patriotism expressed through everyday actions.
Celebrating Ghana’s Independence
The ceremony concluded with a military parade and ceremonial salute to the president as commander-in-chief of the Ghana Armed Forces. The parade was led by Chief Warrant Officer Abdul Daniel Adu, who currently serves as the First Sergeant Major of the armed forces. Born in Kade in Ghana’s Eastern Region, Adu has served in several leadership roles within the army since his enlistment in 1996, including assignments with Ghana’s peacekeeping operations in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Theme of the Celebration
The theme for this year’s Independence Day celebration was “Building Prosperity, Inspiring Hope.” As he concluded his address, the president called for unity and continental cooperation. “May God bless our homeland, Ghana, and make our nation great and strong. Long live Ghana and long live African unity,” he said.
