As the New Patriotic Party (NPP) prepares to elect its flagbearer for the December 7, 2028, presidential election, one of the aspirants, Engineer Kwabena Agyei Agyapong, has opened up about events he says led to his removal as General Secretary of the party.

According to Mr. Agyapong, some party executives deliberately spread falsehoods against him, which ultimately affected his position within the party. He claimed that many of the individuals who played key roles in those events are no longer alive, while others have since faded from active political influence.

Recounting his experience after the 2020 general elections, Mr. Agyapong said he was in Kumasi with his wife visiting his in-laws when he received an unexpected phone call from President Nana Akufo-Addo. He said the president informed him that he was reaching out to friends at the beginning of a new month, which was January. Mr. Agyapong responded by suggesting that appointments were being made without his inclusion, to which the president asked him to visit later.

He explained that about a week later, he paid an early Sunday morning visit to the president during the campaign period. According to him, they sat silently for several minutes, looking at each other, and no one was talking. Then the president finally said, “Agyapong, you know a lot of water has passed under the bridge. Let’s let it go and look for the future.”

He said that one day in August, after returning from work, he found a V8 vehicle parked in front of his house, with a driver and a police officer present. When he inquired, he was informed that the president had instructed him to meet him in Kumasi. He said he subsequently joined the campaign with the president throughout the campaign, and the party went on to secure a narrow victory in the 2020 general elections.

Mr. Agyapong further stated that after the elections, he received no official appointment or direct communication, even though a friend had informed him that he was being considered for the position of Chief of Staff. He later discovered that the role had already been filled by someone else.

He added that he subsequently saw media reports claiming he had been appointed to the Ministry of Energy, which he described as false. Similar reports later suggested he had been given a role in the sanitation sector, but he said none of these claims were true, describing the situation as misleading and unfair.

The comments come at a time when internal party history and leadership experiences are resurfacing as the New Patriotic Party intensifies preparations for its upcoming flagbearer contest.
