The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is set to elect its flagbearer on Saturday, 31 January 2026, ahead of Ghana’s next general elections.
One of the aspirants, Engineer Kwabena Agyei Agyapong, says his long-standing sacrifices for the party date back to the 1980s, during the military era under the late former President Jerry John Rawlings.

According to him, speaking openly for the NPP at the time was dangerous. He recalled working for 25 years at the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation while secretly supporting the party. “It was very difficult to speak or challenge the military government. One day at a party meeting, they asked who would go on television to speak for the party. Someone said, ‘Kwabena, you will go. You are young; we have placed our lives in your hands,’” he recounted.

Engineer Agyapong further stated that during the 2000 NPP flagbearer race, he supported Nana Akufo-Addo. After John Agyekum Kufuor won the party’s primaries and later became president, he invited him to join the campaign team and later appointed him presidential secretary.

“He never accused me of betrayal or claimed I opposed him during the flagbearer contest,” Agyapong said. He also recounted his experience during the 2015 NPP General Secretary election, which he won despite suffering a serious accident during the campaign.

He revealed that while hospitalized, false rumors spread that he had been paralyzed and was unfit to serve. However, determined to prove otherwise, he said he insisted on being discharged temporarily.

“I asked the doctor to inject me so I could travel from Accra to Tamale. I stood there for less than an hour and returned to Accra the same day,” he explained.

At 2:00 p.m. that day, he received confirmation that he had won the election.

However, he alleged that shortly after his victory, some party members began to sabotage him with lies and accusations.

“They claimed I wanted to be another Kwame Nkrumah and later accused me of opposing Akufo-Addo’s presidential ambition—someone I personally supported and helped to contest the flagbearer race,” he said.

Engineer Agyapong concluded that these falsehoods were widely believed by the public and damaged his reputation within the party.
