The Nigeria national football team, popularly known as the Super Green Eagles, was earlier denied a place in the final after losing on penalties to the host nation, Morocco. Meanwhile, record AFCON winners Egypt also missed out on the final following a 1–0 defeat to the Senegal national football team, with Sadio Mane scoring the decisive goal, ruling out a final appearance for Mohammed Salah.

In the third-place playoff on Saturday, the Mohammed Salah-led Egyptian side faced the Victor Osimhen-led Super Green Eagles. The match ended goalless after 90 minutes, forcing the contest into a penalty shootout.
Nigeria missed their opening penalty, while Mohammed Salah also failed to convert Egypt’s first attempt. However, the Super Green Eagles showed composure to win the shootout 4–2, securing third place at AFCON 2026 in Morocco.
