Full-time: Newcastle United 1-0 Arsenal

Certainly not the best game in terms of qualitywith neither side showing the attacking fluidity we’ve seen from them at different points of the season.

The opening 30 minutes were a non-event, with Callum Wilson’s miss from close-range the only noteworthy moment. That was until Kai Havertz flew into a tackle on Sean Longstaff, who read the touch paper for the remainder of the game, which was a feisty affair.

Both teams put plenty into the second half, which also provided little in the way of goalmouth action. Anthony Gordon’s winner just after the hour-mark was fittingly scrappy, with VAR checking to see whether the ball had gone out of play, for a foul and for offside. The officials ultimately couldn’t find anything wrong with it, although Joelinton did look fortunate not to have been penalized for pushing Gabriel.

The Gunners probed for a leveler goal rarely cam close to finding one, with dangermen Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli completely neutralized and striker Eddie Nketiah unable to find any space in the box. Corner after corner came into the Newcastle box and was defended relatively comfortably, with Eddie Howe’s side hanging on with few scares.
